Benue University declares resumption, ASUU Denies Involvement
Benue State University Declares Resumption.The administration of Benue State University, Makurdi, has asked all staff members to resume work.
According to the statement made by the institution’s registrar, Dr Mfaga Modom, headlined, “Reopening of the University,” the administration instructed all staff members of the university to return duty from Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
The announcement indicated that the resuming date for students will be announced later.
“On the directive of the Vice Chancellor, I write to inform all staff, members of the university community and the general public that the university will reopen with effect from Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
“All staff of the university are hereby expected to resume regular duties from Wednesday. The resumption date for all categories of students will be announced in due course,” the announcement said in part.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State branch, has distanced itself from the instruction.
The BSU ASUU Chairman, Dr Victor Tarnongo, in a statement claimed that the association did not shut down the institution, adding that the strike embarked upon by the union remained.
“The school authorities may order the opening of the university since ASUU did not shut the institution but our view is that the action continues,” Dr Tarnongo stated.
Following the directions by the administration of Benue State University, (BSU), on Tuesday, asking all employees to resume, with immediate effect, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Benue State Chapter, has urged on its members to stay calm and await directives from the union leaders.
The Management of the BSU had in a statement by the registrar, Mrs Mfaga Modom, asked all personnel of the institution to resume with immediate effect.
But replying to the direction in a statement on Wednesday, by Terrumun H. Gajir, Secretary ASUU-BSU, he asked members to be calm and await future directives.
The Union cautioned that any member caught in breach of the strike will face disciplinary action.
According to him, “ASUU-BSU is still on strike as proclaimed by the national body”, adding that the circular does not touch its members.
He called for an emergency congress on Thursday, September 29, 2022, to consider the way ahead for its members.
